“Empyrean Isles” was Herbie Hancock’s fourth solo album for Blue Note in 1964. Although the pianist had already landed a real hit with “Watermelon Man” from his debut album “Takin’ Off,” it was only with “Empyrean Isles” that he finally established himself as an artist in his own right. As on the previous albums, Hancock presented exclusively his own compositions, from which especially the timeless hit “Cantaloupe Island” stood out.
